Debt counselling for the self-employed

by The Editor at 16:10 14/03/08 (News)
Britain's leading debt charity, the Foundation for Credit Counselling, has established a specialist service for small business owners and the self-employed.
The CCCS Centre for the Self-Employed is based in Newcastle, home to the regional centre and online support team. It has a dedicated team of seven full-time counsellors.

Malcolm Hurlston, founder of the FCC said: "The problems of the self-employed in debt are more severe than those of people in employment. There is normally confusion between their business and private lives and it is often their business rather than life problems which causes their problems."

CCCS has found that counselling the self-employed takes on average twice as long as counselling normal clients, which is why the specialist service has been created. The service has been piloted since before Christmas and its free phone number is now being launched to readers of Hardhatter.

Like all CCCS services it is entirely free at all points to the consumer. CCCS asks neither clients nor the state for any funds; it receives goodwill contributions from lenders but, as a charity, its dedication is to its clients.

The free phone number is 0800 975 9559. The lines are open from 8 am to 8 pm. A telephone counselling appointment can be arranged in two to three weeks, during which clients will need to assemble their financial information. CCCS has found this is particularly difficult for the self-employed who may not have kept perfect records.

Mr Hurlston said:"The counsellors are familiar with the particular needs of the self-employed and can give the best advice on the way forward whatever it might be.”
